History of Kerrville
Kerrville was originally settled by a group led by Joshua Brown in the late 1840s. Originally named Brownsborough, the area was re-named to Kerrville after James Kerr, a major in the Texas Revolution, settled and helped govern the city in 1856. As the city grew in popularity, Charles A. Schreiner established a series of businesses in Kerrville including retail, banking, ranching, and more. Schreiner’s home in downtown Kerrville at 226 Earl Garrett Street now houses the Hill Country Museum.
Over the decades, Kerrville has grown and experienced a diversification of its local economy with many businesses in agriculture, manufacturing, health care, services, and tourism taking hold. In the 1990s, the Wall Street Journal identified Kerrville as one of the wealthiest small towns in America.
